Clear plastic.

PMMA (Polymethyl Methacrylate, "Perspex", "Plexiglas", "acrylic") — optical-grade clear plastic. Best UV stability among transparent plastics. Standard for displays, signs, light fixtures.

Key principles.

Material profile

Amorphous thermoplastic

Crystal-clear, scratch-resistant for plastic, brittle in impact.

Optical properties

92% transparency

Highest visible-light transmission of any plastic. Better than glass in some respects.

UV stability

Excellent

30+ year outdoor without yellowing. UV-stable inherent.

Properties

UTS 70 MPa

Stiff but brittle. Notched Izod 16 J/m — low impact.

Machining

Excellent

CNC machines beautifully. Polishable to optical surface.

Cost

Mid-range

~$4-6/kg. Cast acrylic more expensive than extruded.

FAQ

PMMA vs polycarbonate?

PMMA: clearer, more scratch-resistant, less impact. PC: tougher (250× more impact), less clear (88%), scratches easier.

Cast vs extruded?

Cast: more uniform, better optical, more expensive. Extruded: cheaper, slight optical variation, faster lead time.

Bonding methods?

Solvent welding (methylene chloride, MMA monomer). Cyanoacrylate. Acrylic-specific adhesives.

Bullet resistance?

PC superior to PMMA for ballistics. PMMA shatters; PC absorbs energy.

Outdoor durability?

PMMA excellent — virtually unaffected by 30+ year UV exposure. Stays clear.

Major applications?

Aquariums, museum cases, signage, light fixtures, helicopter canopies.
