How to start material selection?

Identify driving requirement: strength, cost, weight, corrosion, temperature, biocompatibility. Each application has 2-3 driving constraints.

Multi-criteria materials?

Use Ashby method: plot materials on chart of two key properties. Select Pareto-frontier candidates.

Data sources?

MMPDS for aerospace metals. ASM Handbook comprehensive. Manufacturer datasheets for specific grades. We can recommend per application.

Prototype vs production materials?

Prototype: machined from bar/plate stock. Production: may switch to cast/forged/molded for cost. Verify properties translate.

Material substitution?
