O-ring vs flat gasket?

O-ring: round cross-section in groove. Flat: between mating flanges. Different applications.

Surface finish for sealing?

Ra 0.8-1.6 µm typical. Smoother seals better but wears faster (dynamic).

Static vs dynamic?

Static: stationary mating. Dynamic: rotating/sliding. Different design rules.

Compression range?

15-30% O-ring compression. Higher = better seal but accelerated wear.

Compression set?

Material recovery. Lower = better seal life. Silicone, Viton best.
