Powder coating bakes color at 200°C, producing 50-150 µm thick coating. Designs must accommodate hanging points, drainage, and curing temperature.

Key principles.

Hanging points

Required

Parts hang from racks. Designate hanging points (small holes or features) in non-cosmetic areas.

Drainage holes

Internal cavities

Internal cavities: drain holes for spray off; otherwise excess coating pools and runs.

Geometry simplicity

No deep recesses

Deep narrow recesses: hard to reach with electrostatic spray. Coverage suffers.

Sharp edges

Coating thinner

Sharp edges have thinner coating. Round edges (R0.5+) for uniform thickness.

Faraday cage

Avoid

Tight enclosed regions form Faraday cage — coating doesn't enter. Open access required.

Temperature compatible

Thermal mass

Curing 200°C. Some assemblies (with rubber, plastic) cannot tolerate. Coat before assembly.

Coating thickness?

50-150 µm typical. Customer specifies; Aliphatic urethane harder, polyester forgiving.

Color matching?

Pantone match available. Order pre-matched powder. Lead time 1-2 weeks for custom color.

Surface preparation?

Phosphate or chromate conversion. Improves adhesion and corrosion resistance. Standard pre-treatment.

Service environment?

Outdoor 20+ year warranty available with quality powder. UV-stable formulations.

Cost vs paint?

Powder coat slight premium over wet paint. No VOC (environmental). Better durability for industrial.

Repairing damage?

Spot repair: difficult — appearance differs from cure. Best to recoat entire panel. Or accept service-life damage.
