Different metal finishes have different requirements. Hanging points, dimensional growth, masking, surface preparation all considered before quoting.

01 · Key principles

Key principles.

Hanging points

Mark on drawing

All finishes hang in tank — designate hanging point in non-cosmetic area.

Dimensional growth

Anodize / plating add

Anodize Type II 5-25 µm, Type III 25-75 µm. Plating 5-50 µm. Account in tolerance analysis.

Masking

For mating features

Internal threads, bearing bores must be masked. Specify on drawing or accept growth.

Drainage holes

Internal cavities

Plating solution must drain. Add drain holes in cavities.

Surface preparation

Vary by process

Anodize: degrease, etch, deoxidize. Powder coat: pretreatment + curing.

Color consistency

Lot variation

Color varies between lots. For color-critical, qualify color samples first.

FAQ

Selection guidance?

Aluminum: anodize Type II decorative or Type III hardcoat. Steel: zinc plating cheap, chrome wear, powder coat decorative.

Cost ranking?

Powder coat cheapest. Anodize Type II middle. Plating varies. PVD premium.

Lead time?

Anodize 3-5 days. Plating 2-3 days. Powder coat 2-4 days. Multi-step finishes longer.

Combined finishes?

Anodize + dye + sealing standard. Plating + secondary coating possible. Powder coat over phosphate standard.

Repair-ability?

Touch-up varies. Powder coat hard to spot-repair (visible). Anodize can re-anodize specific areas.

Documentation?

Customer specs honored. Material certs + processing records included with delivery.
