BeCu · C17200 · C17510

Spring + conductive.
Non-sparking.
High-reliability.

Beryllium copper combines spring temper (heat-treatable to 45 HRC), high electrical and thermal conductivity, and non-sparking characteristics. Standard for electrical contacts, non-sparking tools, aerospace connectors, oil and gas downhole hardware.

01 · Grades & variants

BeCu grades.

C17200 is the standard high-strength grade. C17510 offers higher conductivity at lower strength. Heat treatment produces age-hardened strength.

C17200

High strength · spring

Standard BeCu with 1.8-2% beryllium. Heat-treatable to 45 HRC. Used for springs, electrical contacts, non-sparking tools.

C17510

High conductivity

0.4-0.7% beryllium with nickel. 50% IACS conductivity (vs 22% for C17200). Used where conductivity matters more than strength.

C17300

Lead-added machinable

Similar to C17200 with lead addition for improved machinability. Used for precision screw machine parts, connector pins.

C17500

Cobalt-containing

0.5% beryllium with cobalt. Higher conductivity than C17200, better elevated-temperature performance.

TH04 Temper

Age-hardened

Solution treated and age-hardened for maximum strength. Standard temper for high-performance applications.

TB00 Temper

Soft · machinable

Solution-treated soft temper for machining. Age-hardened after machining to reach final properties.

02 · Why this material

Why BeCu is irreplaceable.

BeCu's combination of high strength, high conductivity, and non-sparking behavior doesn't exist in any other alloy.

Unique spring + conductive

High strength (1380 MPa yield) AND high conductivity (22% IACS). No other alloy combines both at these levels.

Non-sparking

Doesn't generate sparks on impact. Mandatory for tools used in explosive atmospheres — oil and gas, chemical plants, refineries.

Non-magnetic

Safe for use near magnetic sensors, MRI equipment, sensitive instruments. No magnetic interference.

Corrosion resistant

Better corrosion resistance than brass. Marine hardware, chemical handling, long-service components.

03 · Applications

BeCu applications.

Electrical contacts

Spring-loaded contact fingers in connectors — combines high conductivity with spring temper

Non-sparking hand tools

Hammers, wrenches, scrapers for use in explosive atmospheres (oil, chemical)

Aerospace springs

Critical aerospace springs in fuel systems, control linkages — high strength with corrosion resistance

Oil & gas downhole

Downhole logging tools, MWD components — non-sparking, non-magnetic, corrosion-resistant

Precision screw machine

C17300 precision turned parts at high volume — connector pins, sensor housings

EDM electrodes

BeCu spark erosion electrodes — for specialty EDM applications

Mold cavities

Injection mold cavities requiring high thermal conductivity — faster cooling cycles

Welding electrodes

Resistance welding electrodes — thermal conductivity + durability

Musical instruments

High-end bell components, cymbal hardware — acoustic resonance properties

04 · Finishing

BeCu finishing.

As-machined

Copper color, slightly pink. Ra 1.6 µm typical. Machines well in soft temper.

Heat treated

Critical step — soft material machined first, then solution treat + age harden to reach full properties.

Passivation

Bright-dip passivation removes surface contamination, produces bright cosmetic finish.

Electroplated

Standard plating options — nickel, gold, silver for electrical contacts.

Polished

Mirror finish achievable. Ra 0.05 µm. Decorative and cosmetic applications.

Laser marked

Standard for part identification and serial numbers.

Bonded

Can be brazed or soldered like pure copper.

Machined features

Threads and precision features stable — BeCu doesn't cold-flow.

FAQ

Beryllium Copper questions.

Finished BeCu parts are completely safe to handle — beryllium is bound in the metal and does not leach. The hazard is only during machining: beryllium-containing dust and chips are potentially toxic if inhaled. Our BeCu machining area: dedicated HEPA dust collection, wet machining (flood coolant) prevents airborne particles, containerized chip handling, proper PPE. We machine BeCu routinely with established safety protocols — no risk to customers.
BeCu is expensive — $60-120/kg vs $8/kg for brass. Justified when: (1) spring + electrical combination genuinely needed (connectors, high-cycle contacts), (2) non-sparking required (Ex-rated atmospheres — no substitute), (3) non-magnetic + strong (medical MRI-compatible hardware, precision instruments), (4) high-conductivity spring (welding electrode tips, mold cores for thermal management). For pure spring applications, steel is cheaper. For pure electrical, copper or brass is cheaper. BeCu wins only in combined-property applications.
Optimal sequence: (1) Solution anneal at 800 °C + water quench (supplied condition "TB00"). (2) CNC machine to final dimensions — easy to machine in soft temper. (3) Age harden at 315 °C for 2-3 hours to reach TH04 temper (40-45 HRC). Dimensions grow 0.1-0.3% during aging — account for this in machining dimensions. Resulting properties: spring temper with high conductivity and fatigue resistance.
BeCu tools meet "non-sparking" classification per ATEX and IEC Ex standards for use in Zone 1 and Zone 2 explosive atmospheres. The copper matrix doesn't produce incendive sparks when struck against steel or concrete. Standard for tools used in oil refineries, chemical plants, gas distribution, grain elevators, coal mines. Note: BeCu tools are softer than steel — wear faster, but that's acceptable for safety-critical applications.
C17200: 22% IACS conductivity, 1380 MPa yield. Standard for springs and connectors. C17510: 50% IACS conductivity, 820 MPa yield. For applications where conductivity matters more than max strength (welding electrodes, high-current contacts, mold cores for fast cooling). Rule of thumb: C17200 for springs/contacts, C17510 for thermal/electrical conductors.
BeCu availability: 3-4 week lead time for standard C17200 bar stock. C17300 free-machining: 2-3 weeks. C17510: 4-6 weeks. Heat treatment adds 5-7 days. Total typical BeCu project: 6-8 weeks from PO to shipping. Plan accordingly for BeCu-critical designs.
